How do I use the Search Results page?
For the search results page we followed a new way of combining a map-based search with common pagination-based search results.
The spot light in the middle of the map is the main tool to search for pictures. The search results below the map always show exactly the pictures that are highlighted by the spot light. So if you want to see pictures that are currently not hightlighted, just drag and drop the map so that your area of interest is within the spot light. And if you want to see more pictures at once, just zoom out the map by clicking the minus sign on the left side of the map.
On the Search Results page, I can see many markers on the map, but I only get results for some of them on the list below. Why is that happening?
You only see pictures in search results that are highlighted by the spot light on the map.
There are two different types of markers on the map. What exactly do these markers stand for?
It’s very simple. A small marker means that there is a single picture on the map and a big marker means that there are two or more pictures.
How can I upload a picture?
There are two ways to do that:
If you’re already logged in, go to your Member Page by clicking “My Pictures” on the top right of the page. Once you are on your member page, simply click “Add New Picture”.
You can also click “Add Your Pictures” on the home page of HistoGrafica, which which will bring you directly to the upload page. If your not logged in, it will bring you to the log in page first.
There are red marks against some of my pictures on My Pictures page, saying “Requires further Information”. What does that mean?
This means that you didn’t enter enough information for your picture to be listed in search results (e.g. information like the year when the picture was taken or the place name, town or country). Entering this information will help others to find your pictures. You can always update this information by clicking “Edit Picture” next to the picture. You might also see a message “Picture not placed on the map” under some of your pictures, which means that all information is present but the picture hasn’t been placed on the map.
I have uploaded a picture but it does not appear in Search Results?
To improve quality of search results on HistoGrafica, we always “eyeball” all pictures that are uploaded. Pictures only appear in Search Results after they have been accepted by us. We usually accept pictures within less than 24 hours. Your picture might get rejected if it doesn’t meet our acceptance criteria but in that case we will inform you by email about the exact reason for rejection.
What are the criteria for accepting pictures?
All uploaded pictures
Where should I place the marker if I uploaded a postcard containing pictures of different places?
It is always best to upload pictures from a postcard separately as multiple images. You can use any photo editing software of your choice to cut out separate images from your scan and upload them separately. If this is impossible to do or if you think that it is not necessary to separate these pictures, you can pick the location of a picture of your choice to place on the map. But please bear in mind that in this case only your selected picture can be found by other users.
I would like to make my picture freely available for everyone to edit, redistribute or sell. What can I do now?
After uploading your picture, you can choose any of the available Creative Commons Licences, which gives you the choice to to make your picture freely available or control its commercial use.
What are Featured Items?
Featured Items are pictures that we particulary like. Any uploaded picture can get featured on the HistoGrafica and it will appear on the main page.
Can I replace a picture I have already uploaded?
Sure. On the member page, just click the Edit Picture button next to the picture you want to relocate. You will see information you entered when you where uploading your picture. Just click Next and you will be able to replace your picture. Once you are done, you can click “My Pictures” on the top right of the page to get back to your member page.
I think the location of another user’s picture is incorrect. What can I do now?
If you’re logged in and the owner of the picture allows other users to correct the location of his picture, you can correct it by logging in and clicking “Misplaced? Suggest a different location.” under the small map on the left side of the picture.
I think some details of a picture are incorrect. What can I do now?
If you’re logged in, you can leave a comment on the picture page. Please tell the owner of the picture exactly what you think is incorrect and why. It is up to the owner of the picture then to amend the details of the picture with your suggestions.
I think a picture is infringing my copyright, or someone else’s copyright. What can I do now?
Please follow the procedure for copyright infringement outlined in our Terms & Conditions.
